Based purely on my enjoyment of the work, I would say my favorites are Jose Saramago, Kazuo Ishiguro, Toni Morrison, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Yasunari Kawabata, and Olga Tokarczuk.

Big Ishiguro fan as well.

I appreciate that acknowledged the aging process. I don’t identify as a canonist but I do prefer books that have been around a while. There’s a good cheese analogy in here somewhere…

Hah, yes, cheese or wine! It is hard to articulate exactly, but there's definitely something to be said for a book's staying power. Thanks for commenting!

I enjoyed reading this. I've been pondering about my own book taste lately (which has changed a lot in the last couple of years) and this helped me articulate a few ideas I've been having myself. I have to disagree with you about the The Book Thief though--it's been a long time since I've read it but I recall feeling like it was some of the best writing I had read at the time.

Thanks Noor - I'm glad some of this spoke to you. I know that my Book Thief opinion is probably an unpopular one - as a self-contained book I do remember it being well-written, but as I mentioned, I just have a hard time with books in that setting.

But thanks for reading and commenting!
